Why does my computer restart every time I try to download anything?

Ok so I re-formatted my hard drive and installed a fresh copy of xp on it. I stalled dome programs from cd but whenever I try to install a program from off the internet (for example Acrobat reader and Media Player) the computer just automatically restarts. Everytime. Whats wrong?
