I just added new soil to my back yard?

I had bad dirt on my back yard so I tool about 3 inches of it and added new soil, also about 3 inches of ne soil, but now evey time I walk on the soil it feels like sand because I always sink and is not hard and when it rains its even worst.... did I do something wrong because I want the soil to be hard, wat to do?
