Is there a non lethal way to protect your home in michigan?

my sister's house has been broken into a couple times while they were gone. they found tracks that suggest that the neighbor did it. the cops were called and they talked to him but nothing was done. i was thinking about hiding out there while she was gone. and hope to get him in the act. i was thinking about recording it. i do not want to use a gun. but what can i do if he comes at me? i know i can defend myself and i think i can handle it if he doesn't have a weapon. after all i do cagefight. but if he comes after me can i restrain him until the cops come? like a citizens arrest. or is that considered unlawful restraint? what if he does have a weapon but i still don't want to kill him. btw 911 will be pressed as soon as he enters the house. b4 i announce my presence
