How to coordinate air travel with an infant? (5 mos.)?

What's the best way to handle all of the stuff for the baby on the plane? I'm planning on holding the baby during the flight, so should I gate check the car seat and stroller or is regular baggage check ok? Also, do you know if you can keep the baby in a carrier to go through security? We're leaving from Chicago, O'Hare Airport
